What they're doing in the picture is a part of basic conditioning called drown-proofing. Trainees enter a 9-foot-deep pool and complete the following steps with their hands and feet tied: Bob for 5 minutes Float for 5 minutes Swim 100 meters Bob for 2 minutes Do some forward and backward flips Swim to the bottom of the pool Retrieve an object with their teeth Return to the surface , and then just Bob five more times

The irony of this appearing difficult is that it is, by far, the easiest thing you will do there. It's warm, there's no yelling underwater, and for 5 fucking seconds you aren't running anywhere.

I was about to say this. I used to spend a lot of time in the water and would do exercises very similar to these, and although this sounds intimidating, it really isn't that hard. On the other hands, everything else that goes into their training is probably brutal.

彼らは正式なSEALs隊員ではなく、基礎水中爆破訓練(BUD)の第1フェーズにいる訓練生だな。これは耐溺訓練と言うんだけど、この時点から実にあと約50週分の訓練がまだ残ってて、それを完了したら晴れて正式なSEALs隊員になれるんだ。

These are not SEALS. These are First Phase BUD/s Candidates. This is called drown-proofing and at this phase of training they still have approximately FIFTY weeks of training to complete before they go through the graduation ceremony making them official SEALS.

BUD/sは単なる始まりに過ぎない。

Candidates generally go through about 3 years worth of training before they can even legitimately call themselves SEALs. 3 years of this shit. Of testing, of questioning your abilities, of destroying and rebuilding your confidence and what comprises your psyche over, and over, and over again, until what comes out can claim a legitimate place among some of the most efficient and deadly warriors this nation has produced. BUD/S is simply the beginning.
